- ONEIDA - Norman R. Moyer, 76, Upper Lenox, died Tuesday evening, April 4, 2006, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Syracuse, where he had been a patient for the past four months. He was born on April 18, 1929 in Oneida, the son of James D. and Effie Colvin Moyer. A lifelong resident of the area, Norm was educated in Oneida schools. He married Mary Caldwell on June 9, 1951 in Oneida. Prior to his retirement, Norm owned and operated Moyer The Mover, a building, moving and rigging company. He was formerly employed with New York State Thruway Authority and the Madison County Highway Department and served as a firefighter with the City of Oneida. Norm was a member of the former Wampsville Presbyterian Church, the American Legion Oneida Post 169, and was also involved with NASCAR racing and stock car racing with the late model and modified division at Utica-Rome, Fonda, Albany-Saratoga and Fulton tracks. He was the yearly champion at various tracks and the state champion many times and in 1968 was the national late model champion. He was inducted into the Stock Car Hall of Fame. A veteran of World War II, Norm served with the United States Army in the Pacific Theatre. Norm was highly respected and true to his word, loving all those around him. Surviving are his wife, Mary; one daughter and son-in-law, Marianne and Kevin Miller of Wampsville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas J. and Linda Moyer and Scott D. and Patti Moyer, all of Oneida; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Eric S. and Ingrid Moyer of Orleans, Mass. and Hugh D. and Norma Moyer of North Bay; 12 grandchildren, Melissa, Daniel, Tamera and Patricia Moyer and Susan Smith, David, Erica, Brian and Kirstin Moyer, Jessica Miller, Scott Bailey and Stephanie Fera; six great-grandchildren, Hailey and Alexis Jacobs, Rachel and James Moyer, Teckhya Rood and Jacob Moyer; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, James J. Moyer on June 29, 1965. Funeral services will be held 3:30 p.m., Saturday from the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 260 Main St., Oneida, with the Rev. Kurt Johnson officiating. Interment will be made in Sunnyside Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home 4-8 p.m., Friday.
