Willet R. Presley, 77, of 28 DeMott St., died at 6:05 a.m. Wednesday at his home after a long illness. He had been under the care of Oswego County Hospice.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Summerville Funeral Home, Sandy Creek, with the Rev. Connie Paige officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sandy Creek.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Surviving are his wife, Doreen; two sons, Ronnie, Orwell, and Jerry, Cicero; a sister, Margaret Seweryneuk, Lacona; seven grandchildren, a great-grandchild and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Two brothers, Joseph and Calvin, died before him.
Born Dec. 30, 1917, a son of Elizabeth James and Willet C. Presley, he was educated in the Sandy Creek school district.
Mr. Presley entered the Army in 1941 and served as a member of the 580th Field Artillery in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. He was stationed in Iceland for a time and was seriously injured and spent a year in Holleran Hospital, Staten Island. He was discharged in November 1945.
He married Doreen L. Hallett May 27, 1944, at the First Baptist Church, Rome, with the Rev. David Boswell officiating.
Mr. Presley retired in 1979 after 39 years of service with Blount Lumber Co.
He was commander of Cable Trail Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8534 from 1978 to 1980 and chairman of the post's hospital equipment loan closet for several years. He received the VFW Political Action Committee Award in 1990, and in 1993 he received the Loyalty Day Award from the women's auxiliary for his service and support of the auxiliary.
An avid baseball fan, he was instrumental in forming Sandy Creek Little League Baseball. He also coached Little League for several years.
