- Peter Sprague Obituary
CUBA - The Honorable Peter Radley Sprague, a former resident of Cuba and Waverly, Ohio, passed away Thursday (May 4, 2023) at UPMC Chautauqua in Jamestown, after a brief illness.
He was born March 26, 1930, in Lacona, the son of Wendell and Lois Sprague. On Aug. 25, 1951, he married Mary Lou Adsit, who predeceased him June 16, 2021.
He attended Wooster College and then served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954, which included a deployment to Korea.
After graduating from Cornell Law School, he moved to Cuba in 1957 and practiced law with Frank Williams, later with Peter Hurlburt, and the Honorable Thomas Brown. During that time, he served as an Allegany County assistant district attorney and was an Allegany County legislator from 1977-1981. He served as Allegany County Judge starting in 1984 and retired in 1997.
One of Peter's major accomplishments was establishing the Allegany County Area Foundation. He was always generous with his time in support of local organizations such as the school, hospital, lake association, Methodist Church. He belonged to the Cuba-Friendship Masonic Lodge 306 F&AM and the McKee Tri-Star Chapter 242 Order of the Eastern Star.
Peter is survived by his four children, Elizabeth (the late Frederic) Edwards of Cuba, Catherine (David) Stimson of Westfield, Patricia Kuhrtz of Colonial Beach, Va. and James (Lisa) Sprague of Rochester; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2023, at the Mark F. Rinker Funeral Home & Memorial Service, Inc., 9 Bull St., Cuba, with a Celebration of Life service beginning at 3:00 p.m. Pastor Claudia Little will officiate. Burial will be in Cuba Cemetery, Cuba.
