Notes - "Nathan Orlando Greenfield is not buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Orwell (as newspapers reported). He was hanged at the Onondaga County jail in Syracuse; his family had arranged for his body to be shipped to Richland (sometimes called "Richland Junction," at that time - there was a good-sized station and railyard). Orlando's father picked it up, and after the funeral the family buried him in an unmarked grave on their property - and that's where he still is. There is no stone."

WEEKLY RECORD OF CRIME.
Nathan Orlando Greenfield was executed at Syracuse, N.Y., for the murder of his wife, Alice, at Orwell, Oswego county, in October, 1875. The case is remarkable for the stubborn contest made in the courts. Three trials were had, the jury disagreeing once, and twice finding him guilty. Three death sentences were passed upon Greenfield, and five stays and reprieves were obtained. After so many escapes from the gallows Greenfield was confident he would not be hanged, and gave up the hope of commutation only under the gallows. The prisoner's father insisted on standing by him to the last, declaring him innocent. This the sheriff refused as unlawful.
