- Newspaper Obituary - December 15, 1960 Sandy Creek News - Mrs. Smith, 90 Dies December 4 - Mrs. Mary Belle Smith, 90 years of age, of Brighton, Mass., widow of William E. Smith, died December 4, 1960 in a Rest Home at Brighton, Mass., after a three month illness. She is survived by two cousins, Mrs. Glenn B. Allen of Pulaski and Mrs. Philip J. Coble of Sandy Creek. Mrs. Smith was born September 4, 1870, at Sandy Creek on the Ridge Road south of Lacona. Her parents were Warren E. Carpenter and Abigail Stewart Carpenter. She attended schools in Sandy Creek and taught in rural schools in this vicinity for a time. Then after taking a business course, she went to Boston Mass., where she was employed as a bookkeeper in the office of one of the S. S. Pierce stores in that city. About 1903 she was married to William E. Smith of Boston. Mr. Smith was a buyer in the butter, eggs and cheese department of the S. S. Pierce store a position which he held until his death in December 1933. Following their marriage, they made their home in Brighton, Mass. Mrs. Smith lived there until September 1960, when a slight cerebral caused her to be hospitalized. In October she was improved sufficiently to be moved to the Rest Home in Brighton. On November 30, she suffered a second cerebral from which she did not recover. Her funeral was held at The Short and Williamson Funeral Home in Allston, Mass,, with the Rev. Wayne Stoops of Needham Height officiating. The Rev. Mr. Stoops and his wife lived in Mrs.Smith's home fourteen years ago while he was attending college in Boston. He is at present Associate Pastor at Norwood, Mass. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Congregational Church in Brighton. Burial was in the Smith family plot at Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, Mass.
