David Jay Smith, 75, of New Smyrna Beach, FL, peacefully passed away on June 8, 2014 at Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler's Southeast Care Center in Edgewater, FL. After being raised in Pierrepont Manor, NY, by his parents Winford and Cora Maxine Smith, he served in the US Army from 1959-1963. David then worked in sales at Kimberly Clark, Mid-State Litho and Southern Wines and Spirits. He established a lawn care business called The Lawnsmith, which has been taken over by his son, Jay Smith. David and his wife Sookie moved to New Smyrna Beach in 2005 where he became a member of the NSB Municipal Golf Course. Besides golf, Dave enjoyed fishing, NASCAR, college basketball and discussing current events. David is survived by his wife Sharon (Sookie), son Jay Smith (Michele) of Pulaski, NY, daughter Stefanie Brietzke (Donald), their children Christopher, Maddison, Abigayle and Carter Brietzke of Dansville, NY, a sister Inga "Jeanne" Scott (Edward) of Bluffton, SC, and a brother Bradley Smith (Nancy) of Pierrepont Manor, NY.
A celebration of David's life will be held at Foster-Hax Funeral Home in Pulaski, NY on July 11 from 3-5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made at the celebration to help honor Dave with two lasting memorials: a plaque on the Beacon of Light Wall of Honor located in the foyer of Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler's Southeast Care Center in Edgewater and a brick in the walkway at Bert Fish Hospital, New Smyrna Beach. The compassionate care David received from the staff at both of these facilities greatly enhanced the quality of his life in these last few years. Condolences may be made online at www.settlewilderfuneralhome.com. Arrangements handled by Settle-Wilder Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 406 S. Orange Street, New Smyrna Beach, Florida 32168.
