  • Notes
    • Grandma Grace was a lovely person. I cannot ever remember her ever raising her voice to anyone. (and she always had such a housefull, she would have had reason!) It is apparent from photos found from her childhood, that she was a very fun-loving, happy girl! We always knew that she loved animals, especially dogs and in the early photos, there are many of her with dogs or puppies! It is very hard to miss the mischevious glint in her eye when you see early photos of Grandma. Long before she married and raised a large family with little money, she looked like she played a joke or two. In the photos, you can plainly see that in the area where she lived, it was common for someone to have masquerade parties. We have pictures of Grandma and other family members or friends on their way to these parties all dressed up in their costumes!!
Grandma was a wonderful cook. As she grew older, her arthritis prevented her from spending much time standing over a stove. This is what she had done for years, she worked as a cook in a restaurant.
I can still remember some of the things that she would fix when we had dinners and she still felt well enough to cook. My favorite was carrot cake with cream cheese frosting!
Grandma was social. I remember that she belonged to some ladies organizations in Horton. She had meetings that she would attend. That was probably back when she still drove... I remember that on her dresser along with some of her jewelery, she would have service pins and stuff. And her bedroom!! Could any of us ever forget Grandma's bedroom!?? Lavendar-- all lavendar color!! Her bed was always made soo nice and her room was so pretty. She had a nice bedspread and a nice dresser full of pretty bottles and cosmetics. Don't touch! We always did, they were facinating! Best of all she had a chest with a rug on the top. On this she had white cats. A family of ceramic or plaster beautiful white cats! A big cat sitting up, a little smaller cat laying down and 3 kittens playing! They were the best!! And she had pretty things on the wall. Her room was special!
Grandma also had a rather large collection of dogs. They were glass and ceramic or porcelin. All sizes and shapes. She just liked them! She also had a collection of little spoons from all over. We all would bring her one whenever we went anywhere.
Grandma taught there was a right and a wrong way to hang clothes on a
clothesline!! The right way is the biggest things to the ends with the smaller things to the middle-- no exceptions!
Grandma also loved the outdoors. She had pretty flowers. I remember in the old house, she had planted Rose of Sharon bushes and there were Zinnias out back by the back door. When they moved to the trailor, she had lots of different flowers in a large bed in the front. These were Boonie's too. He likes flowers and stuff so he bought them and took care of them. They were always so pretty.
Grandma loved all of us. She would do anything for her family. We really miss her. Grace's Seventh Grandchild, Lana
