Newspaper Obituary - Saturday, September 14, 1968 The Palladium Times - Oswego, New York - Richland Residents - Man Fatally Hurt, Companion Injured As Car Strikes Tree - One man was killed and another injured in a one-car accident at 2:15 a.m. Saturday on County Route 48 (Barber's Corners, Lacona Road) a quarter of a mile south of the Wart Road, in the town of Richland. Frederick A. Smith, 20, of Main Street, Richland, and Richard J. Maitland, 33, also of Richland, were both rushed by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Watertown where Smith died of as yet undetermined injuries at 5:30 a.m. Maitland was reported in "fair" condition at the hospital this morning, but the nature of his injuries were not disclosed. The Sheriffs department said at noon today that it had not been determined yet which of the two men had been driving the car. The 1962 Ford sedan which was registered in Maitland's name, traveling south on County Route 48 when it went off the left hand side of the road. The car then went back across the road and off the right side, striking a large maple tree. Deputies said the car was a total loss and had to be towed from the scene of the accident. The Sheriffs department said today that investigation of the accident is continuing. Deputy Robert Wheeler, Investigator Ray Chesbro and Special Deputy Reginald Pappa investigated at the scene of the accident. Frederick A. Smith, 20, who died in the accident, made his home with his sister, Mrs. Nancy Denny of Main Street, Richland. He was born in Oswego on May 7, 1948, the son of Allen E. and Ruby Ivens Smith. He attended Mexico Academy and Central School. He was employed by the Blount Lumber Company of Sandy Creek. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen E. Smith, Mexico, RD; three sisters, Mrs. Nancy Denny and Mrs. Eleanor Denny, both of Richland and Mrs. Linda Jessmore of Mexico; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ruth Ivens of Pulaski; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Smith of Mexico; a great-grandmother, Mrs. Anna Turney of Rochester and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at the Miner Funeral Home in Mexico on Tuesday at a time to be announced later. Burial will be in Daysville Cemetery in the Town of Richland. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday and Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
