A prayer service for Stella E. "Sally" Derosia Lyng, 94, formerly of LeRay Street Apartments, Watertown, and Plantation, Fla., will be at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday at Cummings Funeral Service, followed by a funeral Mass at noon at the Church of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart with the Rev. Richard W. Kennedy, pastor, and the Rev. Pierre Aubin officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Lyng died Thursday at the Life Care Center at Inverrary, Lauderhill, Fla.
Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Lyng worked at the Taggart Paper Mill and then was a bookkeeper for her husband's coal and oil delivery service. She later owned and operated Lyng's Nursing Home on LeRay Street for several years.
In 1964, she entered the practical nursing program at Watertown High School and became a licensed practical nurse. She worked at Mercy Hospital, did private home nursing duty and worked in the infirmary at the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse before retiring. She moved to Florida in October 2001.
Born April 1, 1909, in the town of Orleans, daughter of William T. and Jennie E. Derosia, she received a diploma from Watertown High School.
She married Gordon F. Lyng on Jan. 24, 1927, at Holy Family Church rectory with the Rev. Joseph P. Heslin officiating. Mr. Lyng, a truck driver for Burdick Coal & Oil Co., died Jan. 5, 1965.
Mrs. Lyng was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and a member of its Altar and Rosary Society and dart ball team, and of the auxiliaries to the Knights of Columbus, North Side Improvement League and Allen-Giles American Legion Post 588, Brownville.
She also did volunteer drives and was one of the first women to serve on a jury in Jefferson County.
Surviving are two sons, Francis E., and his companion, Judith Withall, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Patrick M., and his wife, Judy, Watertown; two daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Mary) Newman, Fort Lauderdale, and Mrs. Patrick (Dianne) Shortsleeve, Plantation; 21 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Two sons, Robert G. and James W., two daughters, Dorothy M. Eveleigh Karl and Stella E. Lyng, two brothers, Winfred E. and Chester E. Derosia, and a sister, Ruth Plato, died before her.
