- DUNN - Mary Elizabeth Hewgley, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, August 29, 2009. Mary Liz will be fondly remembered, by all those whose lives she touched, for her endearing kindness, her loving spirit and her cheerful outlook on life. She was born on November 28, 1912, to James Marion and Margaret Corbett Hewgley in Gallatin, TN. She graduated from Classen High School in Oklahoma City and the University of Oklahoma where she was president of her chapter of Chi Omega Sorority. After graduating from OU in 1936, she married Herrick Babcock and moved to Tulsa. Mary Liz was active in The Children's Day Nursery, Junior League of Tulsa, the Ruskin Art Club, Colonial Dames and her beloved Tulsa Opera. She was a member of Southern Hills Country Club and her Sewing Club, which she enjoyed for 67 years. She founded the Young Men's Bridge Club of Tulsa. Mary Liz was one of the early supporters of Tulsa Opera and chaired the second Opera Ball in 1962. She was a lifetime member of the President's Council and was instrumental in the founding of Tulsa Opera Debs. Herrick (Dutch) Babcock, died in 1967 and in 1987, she married Frederick L. Dunn, Jr., also of Tulsa Mr. Dunn died in 1995. Mary Liz is survived by: her daughter, Gayle Smith and her husband Steven of Tulsa and grandson, William G. (Pete) Lackey, his wife Sonia of Boston, MA, and great-grandchildren, Sam and Michael, grand- daughter, Amy Wiley, her husband David of Huntington Beach, CA and great- grandchildren, Nicholas and Avery; and Brad Smith of Tulsa; her daughter, Freda Rich and her husband Harry of St. Louis, MO and granddaughter, Lisa Haden her husband Mark of Ridgefield, CT and great- grandchildren, Hannah and Blake; granddaughter Carey Upchurch, her husband, John of Atlanta, GA, and great- grandchildren, Courson and Caitlin, granddaughter, Ashley Rodwick, her husband, Doug of San Francisco; her son, Dan Babcock and his wife Marty of San Luis Obispo, CA, grandchildren, Landis Babcock of San Francisco, CA, Kate Ghilarducci, her husband Eric of Antioch, CA and Meghan Babcock of San Francisco. She is survived by her brother, James M. Hewgley and wife Eileen of Tulsa, and was predeceased by her sister, Margaret Hewgley James. She was blessed by the kindness and love of Fred Dunn's children: Frederick (Rick) Dunn, Jr. and his wife Jeanette, Burney Dunn and wife Susan and Lindsay Dunn, all of Tulsa. We will be forever grateful to her caregivers who helped her lovingly throughout the years: Geraldine Maynard (deceased) and Lawrence Maynard, Barbara Holt, Johnnie Lee Barnes, Ruth Berry, Beverly Stokes, Barbara Everidge, Sharon Curry, Hillary Ryan and special friend, Patty Grayson. Donations may be made to the Tulsa Opera or the Ruskin Art Club. A Memorial Service will be held at Boston Avenue United Methodist church at 11 a.m., on Saturday, September 5th, 2009.
