Ruth Matushek Jescavage, 67, of Plains Township, a patient of the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2010, in Hospice Community Care in Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Kingston on Oct. 11, 1942, she was the daughter of Francis and Mary Gulla Matushek of Swoyersville.
Mrs. Jescavage grew up in Swoyersville, attending school at Holy Trinity Elementary. She graduated from Central Catholic High School, Kingston, Class of 1960.
She received her registered nursing degree from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Wilkes-Barre. She was a dedicated nurse and had been employed by the Abington Memorial Hospital, Philadelphia; Wilkes-Barre General Hospital; Little Flower Manor, Wilkes-Barre; NPW Medical Center, Plains Township; and retired from Home Health Care, Wilkes-Barre.
Ruth was the loving wife of John (Jack) Jescavage, who passed away Sept. 9, 2009. They had been married for 45 years. Ruth was also a devoted daughter, mother, grandmother and the neighborhood mom to the children living around her.
Her hobbies included a variety of crafts, baking, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren.
She was a longtime member of St. Joseph's Parish, Hudson, where she was a member and past officer of its Confraternity of Christian Mothers, until the church's closure.
In addition to her husband, Jack, she was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas F. Matushek; father-in-law, John C. Jesikiewicz; mother-in-law, Florence Steligo Jesikiewicz; and brother-in-law, James J. Gregory.
Ruth is survived by her loving parents, Francis and Mary, Swoyersville; her four children, John J. Jescavage Jr., Swoyersville; Janine Jescavage, at home; Janet Bellows and her husband, Scott, Howell, N.J.; and Joyce Eichhorn and her husband, James, Plains; her four grandchildren, Matthew DeBiase; Connor, Madison and Abigail Bellows; her four stepgrandchildren, Gambrielle Castaneda; Dakota, Dylan and Darek Eichhorn; and her great-grandson, Amadeus Castaneda; her sister-in-law, Patricia Gregory; her nephews, Brian and Darin Gregory.
Ruth's funeral services will be conducted Monday at 9:30 a.m. from Mark V. Yanaitis Funeral Home, 55 Stark St., Plains Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Ss. Peter and Paul Church, Plains Township.
Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hudson, Plains Township.
Family and friends may call Sunday, 3 to 6 p.m., at the funeral home.
