  • Notes
    • Paula was the fourth child of Robert and Frieda Grossmann. She was born at the Medical University in Tübingen, Württemberg, Germany. Frieda had gone there because of a kidney problem and the doctors were concerned the baby would get infected.

The Grossmann family resided in Enzberg, Baden, Germany, where Paula lived her entire childhood.

Paula immigrated to the U.S. along with her mother and brother, leaving Bremen on July 2, 1910 aboard the S.S. Bremen of the German North Lloyd Line, and arriving at Ellis Island on July 12, 1910. Her father had arrived earlier that year. The passenger list describes her as age 18, single, 4 ft. 7 in., good health, fair skin, dark hair, blue eyes. (see photo)

Paula married Charles Joss on February 23, 1921 in Chittenango. They settled on a farm in North Syracuse, today located at 308 Hamilton Road, where they resided their entire lives, raising three sons and a daughter.
